‘Snitches Get Stitches’ Mentality Fuels Sorority Lawsuit

Sorority Hazing Triggers Busts, Lawsuit

I’ve never understood the attraction of the Greek lifestyle for college students.

I’ve heard all the reasons from my best friends, girlfriends and others why pledging Q-Dog, Kappa or Alpha would have been a smart move during my college days. They talk about the sense of brotherhood, the lifetime friendships and the community service that pledging a frat can spawn.

I can’t argue with any of the that. I guess that for some students, especially those who feel alienated and alone on their campuses, the sense of belonging provided by a brotherhood or sisterhood is a wonderful thing.

But one question I have never had answered to my satisfaction by fraternity supporters is why do you have to go through a beat down to join. If it’s all about unity, why do you show it with hostility?

It’s likely a question that former San Jose State University student Courtney Howard is asking herself now since filing a lawsuit against four Sigma Gamma Rho sorority members who were convicted of hazing her in 2008 during the pledge process.

Howard said she and other pledges were warned that “snitches get stitches” while they were punched, kicked and paddled during their initiation.

Sigma Gamma Rho sisters Princess Odom, Monique Hughes, Joslyn Beard and Nicole Remble (pictured above, clockwise from top-left) pleaded no contest earlier this year to misdemeanor hazing and were sentenced to 90 days in jail, two years probation and banned from associating with the sorority.

Part of me wants to say that Howard should have known what she was getting into; no frat or sorority hides the fact that pledging will take some mental and physical endurance.

But there’s a thin line between tough pledging and abuse – and I don’t expect a 17-year-old “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” to always know where that line is drawn.

I will concede that the San Jose State University Sigma Gamma Rho mess is an aberration when it comes to black Greek organizations, which do far more good than harm overall.

But as long as any frat or sorority allows hazing to be a part of their practice, the door is open to abuse, lawsuits and imprisonment.

Jay-Z & Eminem Go "Home" To Detroit+Celebs Celebrate For Publicist BJ Coleman’s Birthday

Well here’s something to write home about.  The rap game’s head honchos Jay-Z and Eminem kicked off their "Home To Home" double city concerts last night in Detroit.  And their celeb friends came along too.

We’ve got a few pics and video, plus pics from publicist BJ Coleman‘s b-day party when you read on…

<!–break–>

The first of two Comerica Park shows by Eminem and Jay-Z (two more follow Sept. 13 and 14 at New York’s Yankee Stadium), went down at Comerica Park last night.  50 Cent and some other celebs were in the stadium too:

And here’s some vid of Jay bringing out Jeezy, and Detroit’s own Em bringing out his homies 50 Cent and G-Unit:

Em also brought out Drake to perform "Forever".

Looks like it went down in the D.

Nice!

And here’s pics from celeb publicist BJ Coleman (Kimora‘s ex publicist) birthday party last night in Manhattan:

His client Malinda Williams came through and they kicked it with Tyson Beckford.

Kevin Liles and Stephen Hill came to celebrate.

His client Misa Hylton and DJ Steel got smiley for the cameras.  I wonder how her new hairweave/wig/salon ads are working out…

And Russell Simmons‘ new boo model Heidy Allende (middle) also came out to kick it.  Fun times.

Young Black Males Dying in Detroit at Alarming Rates

African American males in Detroit between the ages of 15 and 24 are dying at a rate that is roughly seven times higher than the rest of the Detroit population. If they were dying at the same rate as everyone else, there would be one death every three weeks. Instead, there are two black men dying every single week.

This has set off alarm bells within the Detroit Police Department, which has taken heavy criticism for its policing of the black community. Their most recent embarrassment was the shooting of seven-year old Aiyana Jones during a police raid. But the Chief of Police, Ralph Godbee Jr., is concerned about black men killing one another.

A 2009 report by the FBI chronicles the growing national trend of black male homicide. According to the report, a black male was about six times more likely than a white man to be a victim of homicide. Although black males account for only seven percent of the Detroit population, they constitute 25 percent of the homicides.

Recently, I wrote about how prominent black scholars such as Dr. Julianne Malveaux are speaking up on behalf of the suffering of Detroit residents. The point here is that the suffering will not end until we allocate resources to stop the devastation. As of this moment, genocide of black men is contributing to the erosion of the black family. When a black boy is left uneducated by a decaying inner city school system, he is then unemployed and ultimately either the victim of murder or incarceration. Nearly half of all the black men in my family have either been to jail or come close to death.

Both our society and the black family have engaged in a creative partnership for the destruction and death of black boys, and it’s time for that partnership to end. Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama, both of whom happen to be black males, have the power to stop this. Sure, it won’t be easy, and it’s difficult to care about black males without getting resistance from politicians who’ve been trained to hate them. But I am hopeful that black elected officials in Washington will gain the moral courage to take a stand on this important issue.

The black boys who choose to kill one another do not start off in the world as demons. The world demonizes us, and we respond accordingly. It makes us angry, bitter, marginalized and violent. When growing up in a world that doesn’t accept you, you find yourself doing things you wouldn’t normally do and caught up in situations you’d never envisioned for yourself. Believe me, I’ve been in this theater of life, with a front row seat.

Fix the schools, create youth programs, invest in mentorship. That is how the black male is going to survive.

Farrakhan Supports Planned Mosque Near Ground Zero‎

Farrakhan supports planned mosque near ground zero‎

In an announcement that should surprise no one, Nation of Islam Leader Min. Louis Farrakhan voiced support for a planned mosque and cultural center near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, even though public opinion polls continue to show a majority of New Yorkers oppose the plan.

The $100-million project has been roundly criticized by a majority of New Yorkers who see building a mosque so close to where Muslim extremist terrorists killed more than 1,500 people in the World Trade Center attacks as disrespectful to families of the survivors.

But Farrakhan, who was joined by a group of black Muslim at a press conference, said Ground Zero also represents a hallowed place for Muslims who also suffered in the 9/11 attacks.

The controversial plan, known as Park51, has drawn its strongest support from the Muslim community, but it is by no means monolithic. Even within the Muslim community, opinions differ on the question of building the mosque and Islamic cultural center.

Despite Farrakhan’s pronouncement, a majority of New Yorkers continue to voice opposition to the plan, according to a new poll.

Even though New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has made an impassioned defense of the project at its current proposed site, two-thirds of New York City residents want Park51 to be relocated to a site farther away from Ground Zero, according to a New York Times poll released today.

The poll results back up a reality that neither Farrakhan nor Bloomberg can deny: the wounds of 9/11 still run deep in New York, the most diverse and tolerant city in the nation.

It is unfortunate that Park51 has grown from a building project into a referendum on how Americans feel about 9/11, the war on terrorism and Muslims in general, but the genie is out of the bottle and the majority of people have made their feelings known that they would feel better if the mosque project was moved.

Park51 builders should listen.

To continue on the current building plan, as mosque developers have pledged to do, is to ask for an ugly fight when a small compromise would foster good will and harmony in a city that needs it.

T.I. Arrested: Could Rapper’s Drug Arrest Put An End to His Comeback?

T.I. Arrested

Multiplatinum rapper T.I.’s stars were perfectly aligned: He had finally sealed the deal with his long-time lady love Tameka “Tiny” Cottle by getting married in July; he was basking in the glow of his box-office smash “Takers“; and he was in the throes of wrapping up a new album and had completed taping a VH-1 music special. Until Wednesday night.

T.I. and Tiny were crusing in West Hollywood when they were pulled over for a routine traffic stop. When police officers got wind, literally, of what was wafting throughout their luxe vehicle’s cabin, it was curtains for the celeb duo. The vehicle was searched, drugs were found, and the couple was arrested and booked on felony possession of a controlled substance charge.

Now tongues are wagging. Is T.I.’s comeback career over? Did he put a lid on his coffin by sabotaging his future as not only a successful and respected musician but as an actor.

According to Ed Garland, a defense lawyer for the 29-year-old hip-hop megastar who spoke to the Associated Press about his client, “We’re not making any observations at this time. This is an unfortunate occurrence, and we do not know what the outcome will be.”

As far as his music label, Atlantic Records, is concerned, a spokesperson said that it “would be premature to speculate about the current situation given that there is an ongoing investigation of this matter.”

No one seems to want to speculate as to the outcome T.I. could be facing as a recently released offender, who spent seven months in prison on weapons charges and who had been out on probation. As a condition of T.I.’s three-year-parole, he was forbidden from committing another federal, state or local crime or illegally possessing a controlled substance.

Drug tests and participation in a drug- and- alcohol-treatment program were also required. Despite the stringent rules of T.I.’s probation, not even U.S. Attorney Sally Yates, Atlanta’s top federal law enforcement official, would dare clue us in on what the future might hold for the “King of the South”:

“The probation office is in the process of determining what happened and will make a recommendation regarding Mr. Harris when they have all the facts.”

Another member of T.I.’s legal team Dwight Thomas echoes the general sentiment that no one should be making any predictions as to how T.I.’s case will be handled:

“We don’t have a full grasp of the facts and circumstances. We don’t know the violation,” he said. “I will remain optimistic until this matter is favorably resolved.”

And what about the rapper’s fans of mostly young people, who have not only supported him throughout his musical journey but continued to do so even after his prison release through his community service efforts which targeted youth?

T.I. devotees would travel to hear him preach about the importance of staying in school, working hard and (ironically) keeping their distance from violence and drugs. Many parents of these children say that despite the rapper’s legal woes, they still believed the righteous messages he delivered to their children. “The kids were starstruck, of course, but it was a good forum,” Sabrina King told the AP, who attended one of T.I.’s community service talks with her 13-year-old daughter, Raven Jones.

Landon Brown, principal of Lindley 6th Grade Academy in Cobb County, Ga., told the AP that Harris visited his school about three years ago to openly discuss with the children the regrettable decisions he had made in life and how they had impacted him.

“Many of our at-risk kids are going down the same path, and it is often beneficial for them to hear from someone they can relate to,” Brown said. “The kids clearly heard the message about how the choices they make now may have consequences that affect their futures.”

Meanwhile Tiny, who is the co-star of the BET reality hit show “Tina & Toya,” may be able to skate on the charges with regards to her case. Reportedly, since she is a Mom, jail time might be avoided depending on the quantity of drugs that were found. Legal experts contend that courts loathe jailing Moms, particularly if there is no father to care for the children at home. Jailing both T.I. and Tiny would mean that the children would be literally parentless.

Right now, those bright lights that were lining T.I. and Tiny’s path are dimmed.

Jewel Thomas, Traumatized Passenger, Sues American Airlines

Jewel Thomas, Traumatized Passenger, Sues American Airlines

It was more than 10 years ago, but when I think hard about my own near-death experience, it feels like it happened yesterday.

While driving on the New Jersey Turnpike to my parents home in Teaneck, an unmarked construction barrier in the center lane caused traffic to go from about 60 mph to around 20.

The car in front of me swerved in to the slow lane, but it was too late for me. I jammed on my brakes, narrowly missing the barrier. I did a 360 degree spin around the barrier, missed a Shop Rite truck but a few feet and came to a stop in the middle lane – facing oncoming traffic.

Talk about saying some prayers that night before going to sleep.

That experience makes me quite sensitive to the story of the woman who is suing American Airlines for giving her a near-death experience of her own when a jet she was traveling on slid off a runway.

But instead of simply thanking God she is still in one piece, Jewel Thomas of Seattle has decided to sue the airlines, claiming she was traumatized by the near crash at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in 2008.

Thomas says in a lawsuit against the airline that she suffers from severe mental and emotional problems, even though no physical injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. She adds that she is no longer able to fly and sometimes will “freak out” when she hears an airplane.

I won’t belittle Thomas’ plight but something just doesn’t smell right. If everyone involved in a near-death accident on a plane was allowed to sue, we wouldn’t have an airlines industry.

I understand how seeing your life flash before your eyes can leave you shaken, but I don’t think you can rightfully sue an airline if you “freak out” when you hear a plane, accident or no.

In her negligence lawsuit against the airlines and its crew, Thomas contends the flight crew knew the plane’s electrical system was damaged and allowed a battery system to run out of power until critical systems began to fail.

Thomas wasn’t alone on that flight, so she wasn’t the only one terrified at the prospect of her life ending in a fireball. It’s her right to sue the airlines if she really thinks the crew was negligent, but I’m sure they were doing the best they could to save the passengers – and their own lives.

But unless serious negligence is found, the airline can’t be held responsible if she can no longer fly or bugs out when she hears a plane. I hate to sound harsh but that reaction is on her.

Oprah Winfrey: Gets Dr. Oz Through Health Scare

To be a friend of Oprah Winfrey definitely has its perks.

Close pals of the billionaire media mogul, who will soon kick off her final season of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ have reaped the benefits of her power status in the form of their own television ventures.

After serving as a mainstay health expert on her Emmy Award-winning daytime talk show, Dr. Mehmet Oz was one of those people who launched his own television show.

Though the man fondly known as Dr. Oz is grateful for the opportunities that Winfrey has given him, these days, he’s most aprpeciative of how supportive she has been since he discovered a precancerous growth in his colon.

“I talked to Oprah about this right after the colonoscopy results came back,” Oz told People.

“Her main question, classic Oprah, was, ‘I don’t care about this stuff. Are you okay? That’s the bigger question.’ It’s all about how do you deal with the rough waters you hit? This was a storm that came over the horizon,” the 50 year-old Cleveland-born television personality said.

Winfrey, who produces his popular daytime talk show ‘The Dr. Oz Show,’ was further inspired to put her own health in check.

Oz shared, “She said, this makes me want to get a colonoscopy right away. She’d been putting it off, like I would have done. But she saw how important it is to have early detection.”

Now, the Columbia University Vice-Chair and Professor of Surgery says he’s planning to tell his story to his viewers so that they might be encouraged to undergo colonoscopy screenings after age 50.

“Talking to people and giving them knowledge but not the visceral awareness doesn’t work,” he says. “Oprah taught me that. Use my story. The only way it’s compelling is because you know me.”

Diddy Sued by Ex-Employee for Age Discrimination‎

Diddy sued by ex-employee for age discrimination‎

Longtime music executive Francesca Spero, 51, is suing former employer Sean “Diddy” Combs for $12 million, claiming she was put out to pasture for being disabled and old.

Spero, who claims to have been the brains behind the discovery of countless musical megastars including Combs, had a disagreement with the hip-hop impresario. She wound up having hip surgery two years ago, then confiding to an executive that she was being treated for drug-dependency relapse.

The Long Island woman was allegedly rendered useless to the Bad Boy organization by Combs. The lawsuit also states that the iconic musical entrepreneur thought Spero made too much money and could no longer keep up with the fast pace of his business.

A celebrated industry behind-the-scenes talent, Spero met Combs back in 1988, and 10 years later, she went to work for him. As an employee with Bad Boy, the woman who was once affectionately known as “the Mom” or “Auntie” at Bad Boy, oversaw the $38-million deal between Comb’s record company and Warner Bros., signed new talent and cleared musical endorsements for corporations. Spero is also credited with producing the MTV hit reality show “Making the Band.”

Last March, Spero was given the boot by Combs. Her replacement is a woman who is 10 to 15 years her junior, and who supposedly, does not bring anywhere near the skill sets that Spero has secured under her belt.

A publicist for Combs released a statement saying, “There are many reasons why Ms. Spero is no longer employed by Bad Boy, but age discrimination is not one of them.”

Robert Mapplethorpe/Celebrity Portraits

Robert Mapplethorpe has been widely recognized as a giant in late 20th century photography. His stylistic depictions of celebrities, male nudes, and flowers had made him one of the most successful New York artists during the 1980s until his death from AIDS in 1989. This documentary was made a year before his death, and includes various interviews with him, and others close to him. One of his significant bodies of work are his portraits of well-known figures in the art & music. Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Leo Castelli, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, and many others became his subjects.

On the Road Again With KEM: ‘Album III’ Debuts At #2, Returns Home for Tour Stop

Hello everyone! We celebrated a big first week of ‘Intimacy’ album sales last week. When the final numbers were finally released, the album was #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and was the top-selling album that debuted last week. I have to thank you again for your support of the project, and I hope you’re enjoying the album!

Also…a shout out to all the fans in Columbus, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit and Philly…we had a great week on the Superfest. I really enjoying being back on the road and interacting with all of you…it’s hard to believe there’s only one week left on the tour.

The Columbus stop last week was actually just our show – not a part of the Superfest tour. Before the show, I visited Magic 98.9 – Columbus, Ohio’s station for R&B and Classic Soul – and co-hosted the “KEM Intimacy Hour” with Warren Stevens. During the show we played some of my favorite classic soul songs including Anita Baker‘s ‘Been So Long’ – along with a few new songs from the ‘Intimacy’ album.

After the “KEM Intimacy Hour,” Elizabeth, one of the station’s listeners, came in the studio to meet me – she had won a contest for a meet & greet along with tickets to the show that night. Our hometown Detroit show was huge for us. I had two appearances scheduled during the day prior to the show. One was an interview on the morning news at Fox2 Detroit with Roop Raj, and the other was an autograph signing at Street Corner Music, a great shop that sells new and used music – including albums on vinyl.

That night, we played for a sold-out audience at the historic Fox Theater in downtown Detroit that included family, friends and fans who have been following my whole career. I would be nowhere without their love and support, and I appreciate each and every one of those people. It was an electric show in a spectacular venue that I know I’ll never forget.

I’ve posting pictures on Twitter throughout the tour…you can check them out at www.twitter.com/KEM_Intimacy. Also don’t forget to check out the official KEM Facebook page at www.facebook.com/KEMofficial and I’ll see you back here next week! Until then…God Bless.
